For two years the Netherlands have been in charge of organizing the Eurovision Song Contest. 2020 had to be cancelled due to the Corona pandemic, but everything has been almost ready, then the decision of cancelling the event was a big disappointment, in particular for the people in Rotterdam and all the singers. In 2021 a great show distracted all obstacles and brought back hope and optimism.

The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has selected the hugely talented singer S10 has representative for Turin. The song “De Diepte” will be sung in Dutch, it has been a while, when the Netherlands presented a song in Dutch (2010 Sieneke “Ik Ben Verliefd (Sha-la-lie)”, rank 14 in the Semi-Final).

S10 is the stage name for Stien den Hollander (is pronounced: s-teen), she was born in Abbekerk (Nordholland) in 2000. She is one of the most streamed singers in the Netherlands. The music genre is indie-pop and she is specialized in digestion of psychological problems. Her songs are known for sensitive but also rough content such as depressions and psychosis, she herself suffered from that. In her songs you can empathize in her emotional world: “Onderweg” with Bazart , “Adem je in” .

The lyrics of her ESC song “De Diepte” are also sentimental:

Because everyday it‘s raining

S10 appears authentic and honest. Her unique style will definitely be noticed. This kind of music is very much needed in these crazy times, where everybody has to digest the problems in the world. S10’s message here is to reach people with similar problems, to feel better listening to this song.

In 2019 the Netherlands have made ESC history, achieving the fifth victory since 1956. All thanks to Duncan Laurence, who brought back the contest to the Netherlands. With his stunning ballad “Arcade” he can now step into the footsteps of Corry Brokken, Teddy Scholten, Lenny Kuhr and Teach-In. The last victory is more than 40 years ago, when the fancy group Teach-In could win with “Ding-A-Dong”.

Normally the ESC would have taken place a year after in the Netherlands, but for the first time the Eurovision Song Contest has been cancelled due to the Corona pandemic. It has been too dangerous to host the event under these circumstances. All singers were forced to accept it. Some singers had to right to start again with a new song the year after, but for some the Eurovision dream has just been an illusion. Despite of all the organizing issued to keep social distance and hygiene, the ESC 2021 took place in the same arena, where it should be held in 2020. Everything was different, a small press centre, everybody had to wear a mask and socializing was difficult. Furthermore there has not been a Eurovision village and the citizens of Rotterdam were not able to participate. Nevertheless, the show from 2021 brought back courage and optimism.

The Netherlands do still belong to one of the most successful ESC countries, with five victories in the early decades of the ESC: “Net Als Toen” by Corry Brokken in 1957, “Een Beetje” by Teddy Scholten in 1959, “De Troubadour” by Lenny Kuhr in 1969, “Ding-A-Dong” by Teach-In in 1975 and “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence.

Since the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 the Netherlands participate on a more or less regular basis. There have been certain years when the Dutch broadcaster NOS decided to withdraw.

Over the years there were 27 Top10 places for the Netherlands that means that the chances to get a Top10 place in the Grand Final are approximately at 44%. Since the introduction of the Semi-Finals in 2004, the Netherlands struggled to qualify for the Grand Finals, only seven times they could be in the Grand Finals. Thanks to Anouk in 2013, the interest in the ESC has increased a lot again. She brought back the enthusiasm for the Eurovision Song Contest and made a respectable 9th place in the Grand Final in Malmö. One year later The Common Linnets were able to top that and reached the phenomenal 2nd place with only 52 points gap behind Conchita Wurst from Austria, the Netherlands were very close to victory.
Since then The Common Linnets started an international career and their songs are being played in all radio stations.
