Introduction
The best position North Macedonia could achieve was #7 with “Proud” by Tamara Todevska in 2019. The singer who will be representing North Macedonia this year is Andrea. She is going to try to follow Tamara’s success. With the song “Circles” Andrea is going to represent her country in Turin.
Andrea Koevska was born in Skopje in 2000. With her family she moved to New York and later moved back to North Macedonia. Inspired from the USA, Andrea intended to do her own music and attended the Skopje’s Faculty of Music Arts. Due to the fact that she has uploaded her music in the internet, the producer Aleksandar Masevski got interested in working with her. In 2020 she released her debut single “I know” . The following singles “I don't know your name” or “Talk To Me” weren’t less impressive. The song “Circles” has been composed by the discoverer Aleksandar Masevski as well.
The song is about a hopeless relationship, where the contenders run in circles and don’t get out:
I just want a healthy conversation
Get it right and fix this situation
Everything is crumbling down beneath us
We run around, run around in circles
Tell me is this our last temptation
Can we even fix this situation
Do I listen to my heart or mind cause
We run around, run around in circles
Circles....
It’s another calmer song of this year’s ESC entries. But it also reflect the situation we are all in. And this will definitely be heard and appreciated.
History
For North Macedonia it will be the 21st time participating in the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin this year.
The debut entry “Ne Zori, Zoro” by Vlado Janevski in 1998 came 19th in the final in Birmingham. It was great to see that the at that time called ‘Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ has joined the Eurovision family as well. The first attempt to enter the contest was back in 1996, when Kaliopi with “Samo Ti” did not pass the international qualification round. Various countries like Germany, Denmark and Israel had to pause that year.
The former Yugoslavia took part 27 times and the debut was made in 1961 and there was one victory in 1989 with the group Riva and “Rock Me”.
In the first years from 2004 the former FYR Macedonia always qualified for the final. This was also due to the fact that the neighbour countries (in this case “Balkan Voting”) helped with their votes, as there was televoting only. But this has changed, since 2008 the former FYR Macedonia did not make it to the final anymore, but the lovely singer Kaliopi could change this in 2012. She was the first one to reach the Grand Final again with “Crno I Belo”, she even reached the 13th place in the Grand Final in Baku, many people expected an a lot higher place. The reason for the non-qualifying years had probably more to do with songs which were not preliminary made for an international audience and therefore did not met the European taste. Unfortunately, the former FYR Macedonia has been struggling with the qualification for the Grand Final since 2013 – six years in a row no Grand Final was possible. But in Tel Aviv 2019, Tamara could change it all, with her superb song “Proud” she bewitched the juries and at the end she reached the best place ever - #7. This is the way North Macedonia should continue in the next years. Last year Vasil could not qualify for the Grand Final, with “Here I Stand” he only made the 15th place in the semi-final.
