Introduction
The Armenian broadcaster AMPTV has made an internal choice like the years before. The singer and songwriter Rosa Linn is going to represent Armenia in Turin this year with the song “Snap”. She has already participated in the national pre-decision for the Junior ESC in 2013, the song called “Gitem”.
Rosa Linn, whose real name is Roza Kostandyan was born in Vanadzor, (Northern Armenia) in 2000. In the age of six Rosa started to play the piano. Later she was also a member of the group NVAK, which was founded by the Armenian-American singer Tamar Kapreljan, who also represented Armenia in the 2015 ESC with Genealogy. Have a look how Rosa Linn has been introduced here
The first song of Rosa Linn was called “King” , which she recorded with Kiiara. With the song “Snap”, she is going to travel to Turin to show her singing talent to the world. It’s an appealing fresh song with a memorable chorus which sounds like the modern country style of Norah Jones.
The song is about a lost love:
My heart‘s been on fire
I‘ve been spending my nights
In the rain trying to put it out
So I‘m snappin 1, 2, where are you?
You‘re still in my heart
This is another sophisticated song for this year’s ESC, which has the potential to be very successful, depending on the stage performance. On eurovision.tv she said: “From the outside looking in, the odds seemed like they were against me - an unknown girl from a small town in Armenia. But the power of manifestation is real when it is combined with hard work; persistence; and just putting oneself out there. I’m excited to let people into my inner-world through my music”.
History
Armenia was the first country from the Caucasus region which has joined the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens in 2006. This enlargement of the participating countries was a big surprise but even more a real enrichment in all matters. The debut entry “Without Your Love” by André made a very good 8th place. This year it will be the 14th entry from Armenia in the ESC. Armenia always wanted to win the ESC, at least they have won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest twice in 2010 and 2021! So it’s probably only a question of time when Armenia is going to win the real Eurovision Song Contest.
The best results so far was two times the 4th place, which could be reached by Sirusho with “Qele Qele” in 2008 and by Aram MP3 with “Not Alone” in Copenhagen 2014. Over the years Armenia could pass the qualification rounds ten times and ended up the Top10 for seven times. This is absolutely amazing. New countries can bring a lot of new energy into this established contest which will hold its 66th edition this year. Armenia is often receiving good points and never ended up last. This means that Armenia has a very high chance of 50% to reach a Top10 position. This makes Armenia to one of the strongest newcomers in the recent ESC history. The music from Armenia is mostly very contemporary with folkloristic elements. Since 2017 the trend is slightly decreasing, Artsvik made a 18th place only in 2017 and in 2018 and 2019 Armenia did not even make it into the Grand Final.
Due to political reasons Armenia did not participate in the 2012 ESC in Baku, Azerbaijan, which was a pity as the Eurovision Song Contest strongly emphasizes that it’s a contest of music and has no political impact. Last time in 2020 Athena Manoukian was going to represent Armenia in Rotterdam, but it was the year in the Corona pandemic, when the ESC has been cancelled. Armenia paused for another year.
