Introduction
This year the Norwegian national final called “Melodi Grand Prix” took place like every year, having several shows and a Grand Final night. For the Scandinavian countries the national shows are very important.
For last year’s singer Ulrikke Brandstorp there was no chance to take part again. Therefore other performers received a chance, the competition was very high. In a battle between KEiiNO, the representatives from 2019 and the new super star TIX led to an exciting in final duel. TIX was the favourite of the Norwegians and received 57% of the final votes.
The artist name TIX is used by the Norwegian singer, producer and songwriter Andreas Andresen Haukeland, who is born in Haslum, south eastern Norway in 1993. He is suffering from the Tourette syndrome, which can lead to involuntary tics, that’s why his friend called him TIX, a brand was born.
TIX wrote his first song “Sjeiken” for his brother high school graduation called “Russ”, immediately this song became very popular among teenagers and even hit the Norwegian charts. After that TIX gained more popularity writing songs for graduations. But the song “Sjeiken” has also been criticised a lot, due to sexual allusions and alcohol abuse. More and more TIX’s role has been seen critically, even by himself. With the song “Sweet But Psycho” , which he wrote for Ava Max, TIX could become #1 in the Norwegian charts.
Andreas Andresen Haukeland took part in the TV reality show “Paradise Hotel”, where he wanted to improve his image against the art figure TIX. He also acted as a juror in the “Idol” show and composed another hit, with the topic corona pandemic called “Karantene” – quarantine .
The song “Fallen Angel” which originally was named “Ut Av Mørket” – out of the dark, is a pleasant song with a catchy melody. In the national final, the stage show was impressive, TIX has been wearing a white angel outfit, combined with his usual accessories like sunglasses, headband and fur coat, surrounded by black devils, who keep in check TIX in chains. The stage impression appears totally different to the melody of the song. At the end, this will be remembered and hopefully honoured by the juries and televoters.
This is another love song, where the beloved one does feel the same and the other is captured in chains and has to suffer:
When I know that she’s so far above
How could she ever love
Someone like me
She’s out of reach
Here in the dark, inside the hole in my heart
I’m fighting all of my demons tryna tear me apart
History
Norway has joined the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960. The very first entry “Voi-voi” by Nora Brocksted made a good 4th place. Norway is the record holder in getting last at the ESC when it comes to the voting. In the 59 years old history, Norway has been last for 11 times! Furthermore four times Norway has not received a single point! Even if the Scandinavian countries have a similar taste of music and singers are mostly known all over Scandinavia, Norway and Sweden battle out their own competition, but like all Nordic countries are generally very generous exchanging points with each other, which can also be noticed in the Balkan countries, Greece and Cyprus and in other neighbouring countries.
On the other hand, Norway has won three times and has been in the Grand Final for 55 times and reached the Top10 for 24 times, that’s a 41% chance for Top10 position for Norway. So that’s quite a success. There are stronger periods e.g. the 1990’s where Norway made a top 10 position for five times! In some years it seems that Norway has not such a lucky hand to send a song with hit potential. But some Norwegian entries have become real evergreens over the years in Norway and beyond.
In recent years Norway has been quite successful again, since 2012 Norway could mostly qualify for the Grand Final, that’s mainly due to the good quality songs on a very good international level and the evolved selection process in the Melodi Grand Prix – the national final. Last time the group KEiiNO could make not only the 6th place with “Spirit In The Sky” in the Grand Final of Tel Aviv, is has also been the favourite of the international public. Last year Ulrikke Brandstrop has been chosen as representative for Rotterdam, but the corona pandemic forced a cancelation. Ulrikke was not able to compete this year.
