This year the Swiss broadcaster SRG made an internal decision for the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv. Normally Switzerland relies on the national final. Due to the bad results in the past four years this might be a consequence not risking anything.

The choice felt to Luca Hänni. This 24-years old guy is very popular in Switzerland and in the German speaking countries. He became popular in the German version of pop idol “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” in 2012. Luca was the first non-German winner and also youngest winner ever. From that point on, Luca worked on his music career. By now he has released four studio albums, 14 singles, has been touring and won several awards such as the Swiss Music Award 2013.

Luca Hänni was born in Bern in 1994. In the age of five he started to learn to play drums and with nine as well as guitar and the piano. Later on he started an education as bricklayer, but broke up to give all his priorities to his music career. Beside of his singing qualities Luca also is a gifted dancer and model. He also won the “Dance, Dance, Dance” show on RTL in 2017. You can also watch Luca performing in the Helene Fischer show singing and dancing together with Helene Fischer.

The Swiss ESC song “She Got Me” is an uplifting and positive entry with a modern rhythm and a catchy chorus. The atmosphere of the song has a Latin approach. With a good choreography and a lovely made live show, Luca can come quite far this year. Good luck!

Switzerland is not only one of the founding members of this event it has even won the first contest in history with “Refrain” by Lys Assia in the first year back in 1956, who died in March 2018. Switzerland has missed out two years 1999 and 2001 due to bad placing in previous years, when the rules were a little bit different and country had to pause for a year. So it will be the 61st Swiss entry in Eurovision history this year.

Since the Semi Finals have been introduced in 2004, Swiss entries were struggling with the qualification for the Grand Finals. Only four times Switzerland has passed the qualification round since 2004. Out of 61 participations, Switzerland could only be in the Grand Final for 49 times. And 27 times Switzerland reached the Top10, so there is a statistically chance of 44% reaching the Top10 and 25% to reach the Grand Final since 2004, unfortunately, the percentages are decreasing due to bad placings in the last years. The Swiss entries have mostly been sung in French and German language, very seldom in Italian or Romansch, but nowadays as well in English. In the last four years, Switzerland could not make it into the Grand Finals. It seems that the enthusiasm in Switzerland is not as high as in other countries and in the national finals there is not much to choose from. This year Switzerland has made an internal selection and hopes for a better result.

Probably the most prominent name in the ESC next to ABBA is Céline Dion, she has been representing Switzerland. The Franco-Canadian singer has won for Switzerland the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 with “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi” with only one point ahead to the UK. At that time Céline was an absolute newcomer and she started a world career one year after, when she opened the 1989 ESC in Lausanne with “Where Does My Heart Beat Now”. Nowadays she has her own show in Las Vegas, sells millions of albums and is one of the biggest stars in the world. She is often being taken as role model for young singers.
