This year Spain has also used the show format “Operción Triunfo” to choose the Spanish representative for Eurovision. In the final show the enthusiastic guy Miki could gain the majority of the votes for this danceable “La Venda”, which means the blindfold.

Miki Núñez was born in Terrassa, close to Barcelona in 1996. His parents provided him with instruments. With his schoolmates he founded the band Dalton Bang, with whom he toured throughout Catalonia. The band combines various music influences like soul, ska, reggae and Latin pop. During their high energy performances the band fills out the arenas like a fiesta. With this vivacious stage experience Miki was the right one to enter the Operción Triunfo festival, where Miki could win with 34% of the votes.

The song “La Venda” is of course another Latin pop song, a very fast and rhythmic one. During his live performance and in the video clip it’s obvious that Miki has a lot of positive vibes he wants to transmit to his viewers. The whole arrangement could also be a carnival song, at least a song which makes happy to forget all sorrows. The song has a deeper message, to admire one’s own qualities. Great to have such a positive and rhythmic song in the ESC again.

Spain joined the Eurovision family in 1961 with the debut song “Estando Contigo” by Conchita Bautista, which reached the 9th place in Cannes. From that time Spain has participated on a regular basis, so it will be the 59th entry this year in Tel Aviv.

Like France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, Spain belongs the Big 5 countries. That means these countries are directly qualified for the Grand Final and they don’t have pass the Semi Finals. The reason for this is the financial support to the EBU. The host country Israel will also have the right to directly start in the Grand Final.

The most successful period for Spain was in the late 60’s and early 70’s when there were two victories and some second places. The chance to reach the Top10 is 47%, as in the history Spain reached the Top10 for 28 times, out of 59 participations. Even if the Big 5 countries did not shape up that well in former years, Spain could at least make the 10th place for three times since 2004: Ramón with “Para Llenarme De Ti” in 2004, Pastora Soler with “Quédate Conmigo” in 2012 and Ruth Lorenzo with “Dancing In The Rain” in Copenhagen 2014. There were many great songs with outrageous quality both in songs and singers.

In the long history of Spanish entries there are a lot of gems. Most of the songs were sung in Spanish, while English is getting more and more used so as this year. But it’s a pity that such a country like Spain, which is often bringing high quality entries into the festival, does not win again. It’s 49 years now, since the last Spanish victory. But other countries like Austria or Portugal could also be taken as a good example that everything is possible nowadays.
