The Moldovan broadcaster TRM has arranged a national final “O Melodie Pentru Europa 2019” again like in the years before. The jury put “Stay” sung by Ana Odubescu on #1, while the televoters only gave her the second highest votes. At the end it was enough to get the ticket for Tel Aviv. It’s not the first time for Ana to enter the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2018 she started with the song “Agony” and came 5th.

Ana Odubescu was born in Dubăsari, in 1991. This place is located in the autonomous province Transnistria which lays in the Eastern part of Moldova. Due to the sad fact that Ana lost his father at a very early age the finds consolation and hope in music. Ana graduated from the faculty op pop jazz vocal at the Transnistrian College of Music. Nowadays she is teaching music herself. Ana performed in a jazz orchestra and won several awards and joined heaps of festivals. She also participated in the Russian version of The Voice.

The Moldovan entry “Stay” is a rock ballad about love:

“Stay, until I find a way, to be together
Forever’s here to... stay
No matter what they say
It’s now or never, it’s forever”

Ana is very proud to represent her country in Tel Aviv , she said.

"I had very big emotions, but they are beautiful emotions, indescribable emotions and I'm really proud to have succeeded. For me it is a very important step in my life. And I hope to represent the country with dignity, I will do everything for that”

Let’s cross the fingers for Ana with her song “Stay” at Eurovision. It seems that this song in general might not be strong enough to compete with the other entries. With this kind of songs no party can be started and it’s too inharmonious to be counted as a lovely ballad. A qualification for the Grand Final might be quite difficult.

Moldova had its debut in the year 2005 with the extraordinary punk rock song “Boonika Bate Toba” by Zdob si Zdub. Remember the funny grandma in her swing-chair – that was truly unique! The band is very popular beyond the borders of Moldova, in many other ex-Soviet states this band enjoys a huge success. This also led to a respectable 6th place in Kiev, not bad for a debut entry. But this was not the best place Moldova could achieve so far in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2017 the group Sunstroke Project has entered the contest again with the song “Hey Mamma” they reached a spectacular 3rd place in Kiev! Moldova was never that close to victory.

This year it will already be the 16th time for Moldova in the ESC in Tel Aviv. The enthusiasm in this country is very high and is growing year after year. The Moldovan broadcaster TRM is organizing a national final every year. So far the Grand Final could be reached 11 times and a Top10 place for times that makes a realistic likelihood of 25% to accomplish a Top10 position.

Moldova is also profiting from the neighbour countries votes, Romania and Ukraine were always very generous with their points and vice versa. The Moldovan entries have often been modern with a folkloristic character or an element. That’s why Moldova reaches the Grand Final quite often by a chance of 69%.
