Introduction
This is the first time for years that Ralph Siegel is not involved in the San Marinese entry. Instead there was a national final “1 in 360” with international artists from all over the world. The live show took place in Bratislava, Slovakia. There was a 50% jury and 50% televoting result where the duo Jessika fest. Jenifer Brening made the race to represent San Marino at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon.
The duo of Jessika and Jenifer was founded by a funny coincidence, as both were competitors, but Jessika’s hip hop rapper Irol has withdrawn shortly before the final so Jenifer did a fabulous substitution. So the duo came together and will present the anti-mobbing song “Who We Are”. This song would perfectly match in the nowadays debates about “Me Too” campaign, but this topic is based on personal experiences in Jessika’s life. So sad that mobbing can be found everywhere in the world and people let it happen. Therefore this song should motivate and give a positive signal not giving up.
Jessika Muscat is a Maltese singer, born in Mosta, Malta in 1989. She is singer and actress and also a Spanish teacher. She always dreamed of singing at the Eurovision Song Contest. Therefore she had quite a lot of attempts in Malta, but never with success. Now she has the chance, but for another country. Let’s hope Malta will award her with a lot of points. Here are some examples of her songs:
Jenifer Brenings was born in Berlin, Germany in 1996. She has learned the ballet and the piano, right now she is studying economics. Jenifer has participated in various casting shows such as “The winner is…” in SAT1 as well as in “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” on RTL, which is guided by the showmaster Dieter Bohlen, who also composed quite a few songs for the ESC (Austria 1989, Germany 1989, etc.). Dieter did not let her through to another round. Thanks to Jenifer’s YouTube channel a record company offered her a contract.
With all this experience the power woman duo are going to shine in Lisbon. Well-deserved and good luck.
History
San Marino has joined the Eurovision Song Contest in the year 2008. With the song “Complice” by Miodio, San Marino made a wonderful debut. Unfortunately, San Marino came last – a truly undeserved 19th place in the Semi Final for the debut year. Only once San Marino made it into the Grand Final with Ralph Siegel’s composition “Maybe”, sung by Valentina Monetta in Copenhagen 2014. Last year Valentina Monetta & Jimmie Wilson could not get into the Grand Final either with the dance song “Spirit Of The Night”.
This year it’s going to be the ninth time in the ESC for the small country located in the heart of Italy. Of course in such a small country with only 32.000 inhabitants the local music scene is not very big, this is dominated by the Italian music market. Therefore foreign composers have been invited mainly Ralph Siegel, who has composed five songs for San Marino in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017. And if this would not be interesting enough, Ralph’s muse Valentina Monetta had four trials. Valentina is the only person recently who had the chance to travel to four ESC’ from Baku over Malmö to Copenhagen, Vienna and Kiev. This concept did not work really, as the result was always disappointing. Maybe it’s due to the fact that San Marino has no lobby and nobody votes for it, or the quality of the songs did not match the taste of the juries and televoters.
In recent years also other micro states tried their luck in the ESC like Andorra and Monaco. None of them reached the Grand Finals unfortunately.
It was always said if San Marino is going to win the ESC someday the contest will be held in the Italian neighbour city Bologna.
