Last year Moldova has made a fantastic third place with “Hey Mamma” by Sunstroke Project in Kiev. This was the best placing ever for Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest. This good result was very warm welcomed in Moldova and has increased the interest in the event.

The Moldovan broadcaster TRM has arranged a great national final “O Melodie Pentru Europa 2018” like in the previous years. Out of 16 participants the three very sympathetic singers from DoReDos have made the race with “My Lucky Day” and won the golden ticket to Lisbon. Both jury and televoters liked this entry most. It’s not the first time for this group, as they have participated in 2015 with “Maricica” and 2016 with “FunnyFolk” .

The trio has been formed in 2011 and consists of Marina Djundiet, Eugeniu Andrianov and Sergiu Mîța in a small town called Rîbnița, north of the capital Chisinau. All three members were born and grew up there. Together they have studied music at the Academy of Music, Theater and Fine Arts in Chisinau. In 2017 they have won the New Wave festival in Sotchi, Russia, where their performance has been caught huge interest by Russian ESC guru Philip Kirkorow. He is responsible for several good placings of various artists of the former Soviet Union including Russia. Philip has composed the song and it can’t hurt to have support by him, also in regards of stage setting, choreography and design.

The Moldovan song “My Lucky Day” is a happy folk song with a modern arrangement and ethnic parts. The video clip has been filmed on the Greek island Santorini. It’s an ironic love song with a catchy melody. With Philip Kirkorov on their side DoReDos will have a strong and experienced mentor who will do everything to ensure a brilliant stage presentation.

Moldova had its debut in the year 2005 with the extraordinary punk rock song “Boonika Bate Toba” by Zdob si Zdub. Remember the funny grandma in her swing-chair – that was truly unique! The band is very popular beyond the borders of Moldova, in many other ex-Soviet states this band enjoys a huge success. This also led to a respectable 6th place in Kiev, not bad for a debut entry. But this was not the best place Moldova could achieve so far in the Eurovision Song Contest. Last year the group Sunstroke Project has entered the contest again with the song “Hey Mamma” they reached a spectacular 3rd place in Kiev! Moldova was never that close to victory.

This year it will already be the 15th time for Moldova in the ESC in Lisbon. The enthusiasm in this country is very high and has grown from year to year. The Moldovan broadcaster TRM is organizing a national final every year. So far the Grand Final could be reached 8 times and a Top10 place for times that makes a realistic likelihood of 20% to accomplish a Top10 position.

Moldova is also profiting from the neighbour countries votes, Romania and Ukraine were always very generous with their points and vice versa. The Moldovan entries have often been modern with a folkloristic character or an element. That’s why Moldova reaches the Grand Final quite often by a chance of 60%.
