Every year the Hungarians do determine their Eurovision entry in the A Dál show, which consists of various shows and a Grand Final. With a combination of jury votes and televotes the Hungarians have decided to send the metal and post hardcore band AWS to Lisbon to represent Hungary in the Eurovision Song Contest.

This entry is a real exception in all areas. First of all the song is a metal song with rampantly singing. In a kind this is a shocking entry from Hungary. The song is about death. It means “Goodbye Summer”, the good days are gone, now it’s time to say Goodbye. This topic is still a taboo and should be taken in a more prosperous place. This is a really unusual topic for an ESC song, accompanied by really hard metal tones. This will probably does not hit everbody’s taste. The lead singer Örs Siklósi is processing the death of his father in this song.

The band AWS has been founded in Budapest in 2006. It consist of Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Örs Siklósi and Áron Veress and has released four albums, various video clips and one EP. They toured though Europe and gained valuable stage experiences which are necessary to perform in front of millions of people on the ESC stage. The stage performance at the Sziget Festival in 2010 was one of the remaining highlights of the band.

The band AWS has emphasized that their music is characterized by diversity which combines various styles like metal, psychedelic rock, alternative and post-rock styles. The song “Viszlát nyár” has hard lyrics and hard music. Maybe this song is a bit too much metal for the Eurovision crowd. Metal never had a great chance. Remember that the ESC is a family and gay orientated event, where metal music does not have enough appreciation. Even metal fans might be shocked by the roughness of the song within such a traditional music event. It will be a hard task to Hungary this year to convince the Europeans.

Hungary has debuted with “Kinek Mondjam El Vétkeimet” by Friderika Bayer in the year of 1994 and came 4th with a big surprise, the first three “12 points” were given to Hungary by the first three juries and people believed that this could be the winner! Unfortunately, this was has not been continued by the other juries. Even though this was a remarkable placing in the debut year, not only for Hungary also for other newcomers like Poland (2nd) and Russia (7th), they all shaped up very well in Dublin. From that debut year Hungary did not participate on a regular basis, the biggest pause has been between 1998 and 2005. This year it will be the 15th entry for Hungary at the ESC.

Hungary came back with new music and a lot of energy in 2005. The group NOX could bring Hungary back to a good position with a very well-choreographed folkloristic dance song “Forogj Világ” which came 12th in the Grand Final. This fact did not only delight the TV viewers and audience, furthermore, Hungary found back a regular place in the contest with a big wow! There were other flashy entries like “Unsubstantial Blues” by Magdi Rúsza in 2007 (9th) and “What about my dreams” by Kati Wolf in 2011, which came 22nd in the Grand Final in Dusseldorf. This brought Hungary glamour and international attention even if the low placing was not appropriate. Hungary has established a national final “A Dál” with several rounds and very good and contemporary music. Hungary has one of the most exciting national finals in Eastern Europe by now every year!

Since 2011 Hungary has consequently reached the Grand Final and the placing’s have improved almost every year! The entry “Kedvesem” by ByeAlex reached the Grand Final and made a respectable 10th place and one year later András Kállay-Saunders could make a wonderful 5th place with “Running”, “Wars For Nothing” by Boggie in 2015 has only made a disappointing 20th place in Vienna, and Freddie could reach the 19th place with “Pioneer”, but last year’s Gypsy entry “Origo” by Joci Pápai made a wonderful 8th place in Kiev.
