Introduction
After last year’s disaster with the qualification of Romania from the ESC, Romania has now paid the open bills and is back. The Romanian broadcaster TVR has arranged a national final with some good candidates for Kiev. At the end the most extraordinary entry could win with the double amount of point to the runner up, who was no less than the 2006 representative Mihai Traistariu with “I Won’t Surrender” .
The duo consists of Maria Ilinca Băcilă, who was born in Târgu Mureș in 1998 and Alexandru „Alex“ Florea born in Constanta in 1991. Both singers have been participating at the Vocea Romaniei (The Voice Romania) and made it into the semi-finals. Ilinca is popular for her yodel singing and Alex has studied theatre sciences.
The Romanian entry is one of the most extraordinary entries in this year’s ESC. It will definitely polarize, as people would love or hate it. The strange mix of rap and yodel is an interesting and brave music experiment. It’s not the first time that a yodel song has made it into the ESC. In the last ESC in Kiev 2005 the Global Kryner with “Y Asi” could not make it into the Grand Final at that time. Romania always qualifies for the final. But the question is, will the majority of the viewers and juries will be obsessed with the yodel? Probably not.
History
This year it will be the 19th time for Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest. The debut entry “Dincolo di Nori” by Dan Bittman in 1994 only made the 21st place. One year before there has been an international pre selection held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where Romania could not qualify to the 1993 ESC in Millstreet with the entry “Nu pleca” by Dida Drăgan.
Romania’s entries distinguished modern and up to date songs, less folkloristic elements. With a little help from the neighbour countries in particular Moldova, it was always possible for Romanian entries to qualify for the Grand Finals – the chances are at 100%. But Romania only made it five times into the Top10. So there is a statistical chance of 29% to achieve a Top10 place for Romania. Last year the Romanian entry has been disqualified due to financial issues of the Romanian broadcaster TVR. The Romanian candidate Ovidiu Anton could not sing his entry “Moment Of Silence” in Stockholm.
