Introduction
This year there has been a national contest with 25 participants in Georgia. The most outstanding contribution was the entry “Keep The Faith” by the charismatic singer Tako Gachechiladze.
The singer Tako Gachechiladze is no stranger in the Eurovision Song Contest world. In 2009 Tako was part of the group Stephane & 3G, who wanted to participate with the song “We Don’t Wanna Put In”. The EBU criticised the meaning of the lyrics, as it could have been understood as provocation against Vladimir Putin, as the ESC took place in Moscow that year.
Tako was born in Tifilis in 1983. She early found her way to music, in the age of eight she already had her first live appearances. Later on she has taken part in many international festivals, visited the conservatory in Tiflis and has been singing in Zakaria Paliashvili Music School. Her first album “Tako” has been released in 2004. Since then she is performing as soloist in the Big Band orchestra in Tiflis. 2015 she won the TV talent contest Your Face Sounds Familiar.
The Georgian song “Keep The Faith” is a real dramatic ballad with an epic chorus, which has often been heard at Eurovision. The composer is Anri Jokhadze, who has already been the Georgian representative 2012 in Baku with “I'm A Joker”, which did not qualify for the Grand Final. It all depends on the live performance of Tako, how she is going to present her song. If it should be similar to the Georgian national final, it might be a bit controversial as there were heavy images of the cruelty in the world. The song is about never giving up, whatever tough situation might come in your life, you need to keep the faith.
History
Georgia’s first year in the Eurovision Song Contest was in Helsinki 2007. With a great debut song “My Story” by Sopho, Georgia has been celebrating its debut in the ESC. Armenia joined one year earlier and Azerbaijan another year later. Over all it can be considered as great enrichment having the Caucasian countries in the contest, as they mostly bring high quality entries and a big passion for this event. Of course not many people are aware of the music scene from this part of the world. Therefore the ESC is the perfect platform to get the world’s attention. Last year in Stockholm, there were more than 200 million TV spectators. For a country like Georgia it’s a great opportunity to show the music variety in the greatest music show of the world.
The Georgian entries were always surprising and inspiring, and Georgia has reached the Grand Final seven times. A Top10 rank could be reached two times, the chance for this is statistically at 22%.
Due to the fact that the Caucasian countries are located in the very south east corner of Europe, the neighbour countries like Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran do have an impact in the musical influence in an unequivocally strong way. Therefore it’s a pleasure to watch songs and performances from the Caucasian countries with such a great creativity, as this kind of music is not that well known in Western Europe. But there are also modern tunes as well.
