Introduction
Also FYR Macedonia had decided to determine the singer for Eurovision directly and not having a national final. The choice felt to the well-known singer Jana Burceska, who has already tried to be the Macedonian representative in the Skopje Fest in 2012, 2013 and 2015. The Skopje Fest used to be the national final in FYR Macedonia. The entire production is quite an international one, the composers Alex Omar, Florence A., Bobi-Leon Milanov und Joacim Perrson have been behind the success of Poli Genova from Bulgaria with the song “If Love Was A Crime”, who made a great 4th place in Stockholm. Furthermore the choreograph Ambra Succi could be won, as she was responsible for the stage performances of Loreen’s “Euphoria” and also Poli Genova´s “If Love Was A Crime”.
Jana Burceska was born in Skopje in 1993. Very early her music teacher in primary school has noticed her singing talent. So Jana started her music education. In 2010 she participated in the Macedonian Idol and came 5th. With her new popularity she also became UNICEF ambassador for preventing violence at schools. Jana’s first attempts at the Skopje Fest 2012 “Bi bila tvoja” and 2013 “Love” did not bring her on the ESC stage. This time she has been asked by the broadcaster MRKTV to represent her country and so her childhood dream can come true. "I am grateful and really appreciate the opportunity I’ve been given, but I am also aware of the responsibilities I must bear. My heart skipped a beat when I was told the good news and I have kept on smiling ever since" - said Jana when MRKTV has chosen her for Kiev.
The song “Dance Alone” has been chosen out of 200 proposals. The international composer team combined with a modern disco pop could work well to bring FYR Macedonia back in the Grand Final. The chorus is catchy and radio friendly. Judged by the video clip it all seems to be a cool presentation, but there might be doubts that Jana seems to be a bit shy on stage judged by the live appearances. Let’s hope that she is going to have a ball in Kiev.
History
The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) is participating for the 17th time this year in Kiev. The debut entry “Ne Zori, Zoro” by Vlado Janevski in 1998 came 19th in the final in Birmingham. It was great to see that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has joined the Eurovision family. The former Yugoslavia took part 27 times and the debut was made in 1961 and there was one victory in 1989 with the group Riva and “Rock Me”.
In the first years FYR Macedonia always qualified for the final. This was also due to the fact that the neighbour countries helped with their votes. But this has changed, since 2008 FYR Macedonia did not make it to the final anymore, but the lovely singer Kaliopi could change this in 2012. She was the first one to reach the final again with “Crno I Belo”, she even reached the 13th place in the Grand Final in Baku. The reason for the non-qualifying years had probably more to do with songs which were not preliminary made for an international audience and therefore did not met the European taste. Since 2013 FYR Macedonia is struggling with the qualification.
