Introduction

Denmark has won the ESC three times. Last year the Danes were happy to host the 59th Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, thanks to the glamorous victory of Emmelie De Forest with “Only Teardrops”. The Danish broadcaster has put all its energy to produce a magnificent entertainment show in on old shipyard close to the city of Copenhagen. The stage design was truly outstanding and has set new standards.

Last year’s host entry “Cliché Love Song” reached a solid 9th place by Basim and made the Danes proud as hosts. With the same effort the Danes have organized the national final called Melodi Gran Prix in Aalborg in January. Ten songs of high quality out of almost 700 submissions have been presented in a delightful and entertaining show.

At the end the jury and televoters have decided that the Danish rock band Anti Social Media should go to Vienna with the song “The Way You Are”. With a margin of six points they could gather the ticket to the ESC, whilst the majority of the points came from the juries.

The band with the extraordinary name exists since 2014. The young band members Philip Thornhill (vocal), Nikolaj Tøth (guitar), David Vang (bass) and Emil Vissing (drums) look like the young Beach Boys 2.0 and show all their enthusiasm on stage. With their Eurovision entry they already climbed up the Danish charts.

The song “The Way You Are” is an optimistic love song with a strong and catchy chorus. The four guys have a cool old-fashioned look like the Beach Boys from the 1950’s which works well with the atmosphere of the song.
It all depends on the competitors, but this one is a strong song from Denmark which should not be underestimated as it’s a good radio song which everybody could easily sing along.

The first Danish entry in 1957 called “Skibet Skal Sejle I Nat” and sung by Birthe Wilke and Gustav Winckler. Denmark achieved a fanstastic 3rd place immediately. Over the years Denmark took part for 43 times with a big gap from 1966 to
1978. They paused because of a lack of public interest. In all that years, Denmark could reach the Grand Final 41 times.

In former years when it was only allowed to sing in the native languages, so this might have been a disadvantage for Danish entries. That's why the Danes were so eager compensate the language disadvantage with good and happy compositions.
The "Happy Scandinavian song" have been dominating in the 80's and 90's. Nowadays all Danish entries are being sung in English. The statics say that the the chance to reach a Top10 position for Denmark are at 57%, so not too bad. It has often been said that the Danes give all their points to the other Nordic countries and vice versa. But this is a quite natural phenomenon, as the music taste is similar.
The Danes were number one for three times. This meant a lot to the Eurovision enthusiastic Danes. Last year's ESC in Copenhagen has set a new standard of stage design and effort. This was the farmost outraging stage which has even been seen at Eurovision so far.
