Introduction

Georgia has held a national final to determine the entry for Vienna. The five songs have been presented to the public two weeks before the contest, so that the Georgians had enough time to make the right decision. The unglamorous show also included international jurors such as Emmelie De Forrest (winner of the ESC in 2013 with “Only Teardrops” for Denmark) and the Swedish composer Thomas G:son. Nina Sublatti has been the winner with the self composed song “Warrior”.

Nina Sublatti, whose original name is Nina Sulaberidse was born in Moscow, Russia in 1995. Shortly after that her Georgian family moved back to Tbilisi. As a child she attended the school of art, where she learned drawing, painting and sculpturing. Later on Nina has is also working as a model with designers and photographers from Los Angeles and New York. With the label “Georgian Dream Studio” she started her singing career together with the singer Beta Iwanischwili. Nina’s idols are Janis Joplin, Brian Molko and Björk. Now she is studying music technology at the conservatorium. She worked with various bands and gave concerts in her home country. In 2013 she won the Georgian TV show “Saqartvelos Varskvlavi“and released her first album “Dare to be Nina Sublatti” in 2014 which has been the best sold album in Georgia.

The headstrong 19 years old singer Nina Sublatti seems to be a great talent already. She also enjoys her self-representation, many tattoos adorn her arms – a living work of art literally. Her self-confidence can also be noticed in the video clip for the ESC. The brilliantly made clip shows the enthusiasm with the work up into the smallest details.

The electro pop song “Warrior” is Nina’s own composition, which underwent a total makeover by the Swedish composer Thomas G:son who already composed the Georgian entry from 2013 “Waterfall” by Nodi Tatishvili & Sophie Gelovani, which came 15th in Malmö.
The somewhat dark pop song has a certain uniqueness which might stand out in Vienna. Accompanied with Nina’s strong personality and voice power this entry will certainly get a lot of attention.

Georgia’s first year in the Eurovision Song Contest was in Helsinki 2007. With a great debut song “My Story” Georgia was celebrating its debut in the ESC. Armenia joined one year earlier and Azerbaijan one year later. It’s considered as great enrichment having the Caucasian countries in the contest, as they mostly bring high quality entries. Of course not many people are aware of the music scene from this part of the world. Therefore the ESC is the perfect platform to get the world’s attention. Last year in Copenhagen, there were 195 million TV spectators. This year in Vienna there might be more, due the 60th anniversary.

The Georgian entries were always surprising, and Georgia has reached the Grand Final five times. A Top10 rank could be reached two times, the chance for this is statistically at 25%.
Due to the fact that the Caucasian countries are located in the very south east corner of Europe, the neighbour countries like Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran do have an impact in the musical influence in an unequivocally strong way. Therefore it’s a pleasure to watch songs and performances from the Caucasian countries with such a great creativity, as this kind of music is not that well known in Western Europe.
The most outstanding song was the debut entry “My story” by Sopho in 2007, which reached a remarkable 12th rank in the final.

Last year the experimental song “Three Minutes To Earth” by The Shin & Mariko came last in the Semi Final. This entry was far too special to succeed.
