Introduction

There has been a real national final in Spain again. In a nicely made TV show the Spanish broadcaster TVE has put five potential candidates on the list for Copenhagen. In the beginning there have been two clear favourites already: Ruth Lorenzo and Brequette. The jury gave the maximum votes to Brequette, with the additional points televoters it ended up in a tie between these two singers. Due to the fact that the majority of the televoters called for Ruth Lorenzo she finally won the ticket to Denmark. This was a truly exciting final; a lot of people thought this might have been the wrong decision. How it will all come out, we will see in Copenhagen.

Ruth Lorenzo was born in 1982 in Murcia, in the south eastern part of Spain. In early years Ruth was keen on singing and admired the opera singer Montserrat Caballé. This might have formed Ruth’s passion for music. Ruth is singer and composer has entered several TV music show and toured with rock bands in the UK and Ireland. She entered the British X Factor show in 2008 where she came 5th with the support of Dannii Minouge as her mentor. Her debut single “Burn” reached #16 in the Spanish charts. In 2013 she has released several singles like “The night” and “Love Is Dead” in and is now part of the band The Raspberry Pattern and the first album is called “Planeta Azul”.

The Eurovision song “Dancing in the rain” is a power ballad with a huge atmosphere and has reached a good position in the Spanish iTunes charts already. Her voice is extraordinary strong especially with the long and high notes. Her elfin look will support the dynamic of the song. We had Pastora Soler in Baku, who made a very good 10th rank with a similar styled song. If Ruth could work on her stage performance she will definitely shape up well in Copenhagen.

For the 54th time Spain is participating at the Eurovision Song Contest this year. Spain belongs to the Big 5 countries together with Italy, United Kingdom, France and Germany. The Big 5 countries are the biggest financial supporters in the EBU so they have the right to start directly in the grand final and they don’t have to go through the semi finals like all the other countries. Spain has won the ESC twice, but that’s some years ago “La, la, la...” by Massiel in 1968 and “Vivo Cantando” by Salomé in 1969. Beside of that there were 27 Top 10 positions, the most popular ones were: “Su Canción” by Betty Missiego in 1979 (2nd), “Bandido” by Azucar Moreno in 1990 (6th) and “Vuelve Conmigo” by Anabel Conde in 1995 (2nd). Unfortunately, the Spanish entries were not that successfully recently and often found on the bottom of the scoreboards. The entries from Spain were mainly in Spanish, while other countries used the open language rule, also France tried some verses or choruses in English. The Spanish organizers have tried almost everything to bring Spain back to the old successful stream. Pastora Soler reached a remarkable 10th place with “Quédate Conmigo” in 2012, while last year’s entry “Contigo Hasta El Final” by ESDM came last in Malmö.
