IntroductionThe Latvian broadcaster LTV has organized a huge national final which also had some semi finals with the best Latvian hopefuls in Ventspils. The final show had 12 finalists, some of them had similarities to previous songs from the ESC or other genres, and no exception is the winning entry “Cake To Bake” by Aarzemnieki. The lead singer Jöran Steinhauer is 27 years old, born in Bochum, Germany. Jöran has been fascinated by the country Latvia since the year 2000, when Brainstrom entered the Eurovision Song Contest with “My Star” and came 3rd in Stockholm. After he finished school he went to Latvia and kept his fascination. By now he has emigrated in Latvia. His first attempt to enter the ESC with the song “More than 27” in a duet called Joran & Axlina in 2008. Unfortunately, the European theme did not work out. Therefore he made his first hit with “Paldis Latinam” (Thank you little Lats) a song about the introduction of the EURO in Latvia and the good bye of the former Latvian currency Lats. He became popular though various comedian videos on YouTube. In 2014 Jöran founded the band Aarzemnieki, which means foreigner together with Guntis Veilands, Katrīna Dimanta and Raitis Vilumovs. The song “Cake To Bake” is an uplifting and funny song. The typical style of the band’s music can be described as Indie-Folk. The cherish band is appearing more like church youth group with a guitar and wild dancing. The chorus is very catchy; unfortunately there are strong similarities to several songs e.g. the German Carnival song “Ich hab 3 Haare auf der Brust ich bin ein Bär” by Bernd Stelter and “Peter Pan” by Paola. This won’t be the only song of this kind, also Malta and Switzerland will come with this kind of indie music.
HistoryParticipations: 15 Debut: 2000 Biggest success: 1x 1st place “I Wanna” by Marie N in 2002, 1x 3rd place “My Star” by Brainstrom in 2000, 1x 5th place In the short history of Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest, the biggest success came in the third year after the debut. In 2002 Marie N. could convince the juries and televoters with „I wanna“. Latvia describes itself as “the land that sings” which origins in the long singing tradition which takes place in singing festivals all over the country. This can also be said from the neighbour country Estonia. The best ranks could be reached by “My star” by Brainstorm in 2000 (3rd) and “The war is not over” by Walter & Kleins in 2005 (5th). In the last five years Latvia could not reach the grand final anymore, even if the Latvian songs seem to be contemporary. Compared to the more successful neighbour Estonia, Latvia has not found its clear successful line back again; all Latvian entries are totally different from each other. Even if the Latvians love to sing, but obviously don’t hit the European taste unfortunately.
