Introduction

Last year Emmelie de Forest could achieve the third victory for Denmark in Eurovision history with “Only Teardrops”. Winning for Denmark in Sweden has become a kind of tradition as the same happened in 2000 when the Olsen Brothers could win with “Fly On The Wings Of Love”. Due to the fact that this year Denmark is the host country of the 59th Eurovision Song Contest it’s a special mission for the Danes to present a good host entry again. There has been a national final with ten participants in Odense to determine the Danish entry 2014. The winner was Basim with “Cliché Love Song”, a funky dance song.

Anis Basim Moujahid was born in 1992, he is Moroccan origin, grew up in Høje Gladsaxe and lives in Copenhagen now. In the age of 15 he entered the X-Factor show and became 4th. After the X-Factor experience he started a solo career and released two albums “Alt det jeg ville have sagt” in 2008 and “Befri dig selv” in 2009 and seven singles. Basim’s music can be described as pop with a hint of soul and R & B.

The Song “Cliché Love Song” is also a pop song with strong funk and R & B elements it has a catchy chorus and a cool rhythm. The lyrics are about a girl Basim met with whom he had a crush on and he tries everything that she loves him, so it’s a kind of cliché in a love song.

Maybe it’s a good omen that Basim has Moroccan roots, Loreen – Sweden’s last winner also had Moroccan roots. The song is catchy and funky and will not only make the Danes proud. Basim’s voice is cool and original. It’s a very happy song which could played easily in every radio station around the world – early in the morning with a nice sunrise and in a very good mood. This is a perfect song for a host country, which even has chances to win again! With the right stage performance and choreography and a full house on the final night this will certainly do well.

Since 1957 Denmark participates in the Eurovision Song Contest. The first entry “Skibet Skal Sejle I Nat” by Birthe Wilke and Gustav Winckler reached a third place. Denmark has been taking part regularly, but also took a big break of 12 years from 1966 until 1978, after that the Danes came back with new energy and more happy songs which are often described as “Happy Scandinavian Songs”. In the years when singers were only allowed to sing in their native language, this might have been a disadvantage for Danish entries. Nowadays all Danish songs are presented in English for the reason of understanding and sales wise. There have been three victories in history: “Dansevise” by Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann in 1963, “Fly on the wings of Love” by the Olsen Brothers in 2000 and the fulminant victory of Emmelie de Forest with “Only Teardrops” in Malmö last year.

In former years a lot of people complained that the Scandinavian countries shove the points to each other. This is mainly due to the similar taste of music in that particular region. It’s the same situation in the Balkan region or Eastern Europe. Sometimes the singers are even well known in the neighbour countries this can better the result on the scoreboard at the end.
