The United Kingdom is taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1957. In all these years the UK has been known as a kind of trendsetter with popular “pop music” which also brought the contest from chanson to pop. There were five victories and 15 times on the second rank! That’s the absolute record for the second place in Eurovision. The ESC has always been of high interest in the UK and many times the UK entries have reached top positions in the charts. Due to the fact that there are so many strong entries from the Eastern European countries, mostly sung in English, the UK and also Ireland and Malta had to suffer. There is more effort asked nowadays. Last year the UK has send Jade with “My time” to ESC, with the famous composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and received a respectable 5th place. Not a win, but still respect for one of the most important and successful old-established United Kingdom. The UK has started a show calls “Your country needs you” last year, with success. So this year another successful composer should write the UK song for Oslo. This time it’s Pete Waterman, Mike Stock and Steve Crosby – formally known as Stock-Aitken-Waterman, who wrote many successful #1 songs for Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Rick Astley. There has also been another attempt in the history of the ESC in 1984 Stock-Aitken-Waterman produced “Anni-Marie Elena” sung by Andy Paul which came 15th. The good looking singer Josh has convinced the UK TV spectators. The song “That sounds good to me” is an ordinary pop song, unfortunately nothing very impressive and rememberable. The show itself was quite weak and the singing qualities of many singers were frightening. Don’t expect something big like “Step back in time”, the song is something very basic. The popular producers have promised that the song and the arrangement will be overworked totally and a new revamped style can be expected. Let’s hope so! |
