In 1994 Russia celebrated its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest. The charismatic singer Youddiph impressed the audience in Dublin as well as the TV spectators and responsible juries with her inartificial behavior. Her song “Eternal Wanderer” came 9th and has inspired many Russian musicians and singers. From that time Russia has been very keen on participating all the following years. In the year 1994 the iron curtain has been removed from the Eurovision map of Europe, the Eastern European countries came into the contest and brought lots of new music and originality into the competition. Russia belongs to the most successful countries recently, many second and third places and finally 2008 the victory with “Believe” sung by Dima Bilan, who brought the ESC to Moscow the following year. In the early 90’s probably nobody could even think of the Eurovision Song Contest being held in Moscow, but the 2009 contest was supposable the most modern contest of all times. The usage of the latest stage technology and the immense size of the venue were outstanding and spectacular. The Russian were very proud of hosting this event once in their capital. As Russia does not belong to the “Big 4” countries so far, there is going to be a change in 2011, where Russia will belong to that exclusive circle of countries which do not have to qualify for the final. This is due to the fact that Russia is going to pay a higher fee to the EBU. From next year there will be the “Big 5” countries. After ending up 11th in last year’s final and also hosting the contest, Russia is maybe a bit tired of Eurovision. There has been a marathon pre decision with 26 songs; unfortunately there was nothing spectacular or outstanding, which could follow the steps of Dima Bilan, Serebro, t.A.T.u. or Alsou. This time Russia will send a quite ordinary, almost boring song significantly called “Lost and Forgotten”. The voice of the singer sounds like whining, very sad even though! With such a song they won’t even qualify for the final. The start position #2 in Semi Final 1 is also not very advantageous, that’s something to cry for!
