Greece is taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1974. They were always trying so hard to win the contest, only once they were lucky with “My number one” by Helena Paparizou. In the early years, the Greek songs were very Greek with Bouzouki and dance, but unfortunately not very well honored by the juries, the Greek entries have not been taken seriously. But nowadays with televoting and very up to date songs Greece is among the favorites almost every year and shapes up very well. Who ever thought that this happens? On the other hand the other countries which have always been successful like United Kingdom, France and Spain have problems of being competitive. Maybe it’s due to the countries financial depression, the Greek pre decision did not bring anything like they used to bring. None of the songs did even have a chance. The winning entry “OPA” is probably the worst Greek songs after “Diri Diri” in 1994. Of course there are folkloristic elements, but with rap and old men it does not look like winning the contest. This will be the first time Greece stays out of the final. Maybe the Greeks should send Kati Garbi next year.
