United Kingdom is one of the countries, which has taken part in the Eurovision competition every year since the beginning 1956. No other country has sent in so many internationally respected entries that always did well in the Song Contest. Unfortunately the concept didn't work last year - for the first time in Eurovision history the UK didn't receive a single point and came last. The duo Jemini did not only shock the audience in Riga's Skonto Hall with lots of off-key singing - also the audiences in front of their TV's all over Europe! Usually other countries like Finland, Norway or Portugal had to deal with the famous 'Nil Points' but never the UK. However, songs from the UK often became strong in the national and international charts: "Say It Again" sung by Precious (Jerusalem 1999), "Where Are You?" by Imaani (Birmingham 1998) and "Lonely Symphony (We Will Be Free)" by Frances Ruffelle (Dublin 1994).

Of course the country was highly disappointed by such a bad result in Riga and the BBC was in need for a new concept for the national final. They came up with a new format called "Making your mind up" - there were six artists competing, of which James Fox won with a song called "Hold On To Your Love". The 27 year old singer has already entertained British troops on the scene in the Kosovo, the Falkland Islands and Afghanistan. Last year he became 5th in the TV format "Fame Academy". The ballad "Hold On To Your Love" is not really a pop song, like usual UK entries have been - it's more edgy, rocky but still with a catchy tune. Unfortunately due to the great number of songs this one might easily be overheard.
