Introduction

Like every year Malta is organizing a huge music festival where the Maltese representative for the Eurovision Song Contest will be determined. After one semi final and one big final Gianluca Bezzini went out as a proud winner with the song “Tomorrow”. The bets have been looking differently before and Kevin Borg has been handled as the big favourite. So at the end the winner has been a little surprise. The result is a mix of jury (also international) and televoting.

“Tomorrow” is a happy song with typical sound of a small guitar, a real radio song though. The 23 years old sympathetic singer is a doctor of medicine and surgery in his real life. But his close connection to music has accompanied his entire life. He has studied the piano in the age of seven and has joined the Maltese children’s choir. Until now he is playing in a band and which has released three singles already.

As always the Maltese entries are going to receive a general make over, a better sound and rhythm with a contemporary video clip is being produced to give the entry to highest possible outcome. With Gianluca’s friendly and natural attitude it will be easy for him to reach the final in Malmö.

It’s the 26th participation of Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. Malta is mainly known for English ballads and pop songs. Malta always enjoyed the privilege of singing English as it is one of the official languages in Malta beside of Maltese, which has been used twice in the beginning in 1971 and 1972. This language advantage has been important in the 90’s, as the new language rule is now allowing that every country to choose the language of preference, so singing in English is no real advantage anymore. There have been many good Top 10 places in history, unfortunately, Malta has never won the contest so far, but there were two second places “7th Wonder” by Ira Losco in 2002 and “Angel” by Chiara in 2005; and two third places “Little Child” by Mary Spiteri in 1992 and “The one that I love” by Chiara in 1998. Furthermore there were one fifth, one sixth, two eighth, two ninth and two tenth places. Since 2004 Malta could reach the grand final only five times due to the fact that the semi finals have been introduced in that year.
