Introduction

For the 6th time, Georgia takes part in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. The Georgian broadcaster GBP had more luck in choosing the candidates directly in the past instead organizing a huge TV show. The choice felt to Nodi Tatishvhili & Sophie Gelovani, a duo with a lot of music experiences, both studied music and are well known in their home country and furthermore in Armenia and Moldova. Georgia was always very keen on winning the ESC one day, this year they seem to have a good hand, it has been announced that Thomas G:son will be composing  the Georgian entry. He is the composer of last year’s winning entry for Sweden “Euphoria” sung by Loreen.

The Georgian entry is a classical Eurovision ballad, sung in English language. For the first time Georgia sends a duet to the ESC. The song is called “Waterfall” and has nothing typical Georgian in it, it’s even a bit old-fashioned, but indeed a strong song with a beautiful chorus and an impressive climax. This year Georgia can be seen among the favourites. With a good stage show this entry can shine in Malmö. Will Thomas G:son do it again?

In 2007 the biggest surprise was that Georgia had debuted. For the first time Georgia has joined the Eurovision family, one year later than the neighbour country Armenia, and one year before Azerbaijan. This year it’s going to be the 6th participation already. Due to the fact that the Caucasian countries are located in the very south east corner of Europe, the neighbour countries like Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran do have an impact in the musical influence in an unequivocally strong way.  Therefore it’s a pleasure to watch songs and performances from the Caucasian countries with such a great creativity, as this kind of music is not that well known in Western Europe.

Georgia has tried to combine traditional Georgian music with contemporary sounds which can be seen in almost all the Georgian entries. The most outstanding song was the debut entry “My story” by Sopho in 2007, which reached a remarkable 12th rank in the final. Georgia has qualified for the final five times out of six. Due to the high level of qualitative music from Georgia, the country reaches a considerable attention all over Europe.
