Participant(s): Sjonni's Friends Song: Coming Home Writer(s): Thorunn Clausen and Sjonni Brink Composer(s): Sjonni Brink |
One of the most eager countries in the Eurovision Song Contest is Iceland. For the first time, Iceland took part in the contest in 1986, before it was not possible in regards of the technical requirements. Since then Iceland is really willing to take part and also keen on winning. Unfortunately, they never made it, but it was quite close, two second ranks in history: “All out of luck “by Selma (#2) in 1999 and recently with “Is it true?” by Johanna in 2009. Music from Iceland is mostly associated with Björk and Mezzoforte, but there are many talents on this island with less than a half million inhabitants. The Scandinavian lifestyle and music taste is very close the Icelandic. In Eurovision there were many good and remarkable songs in history, even if they did not shape up very well like the first entry “Gleðibankinn” by Icy (#16) in 1986, “Sjúbídú” by Anna Mjöll (#13) in 1996 or “If I had your love” by Selma (#16 in the semi final). Surely, one day Iceland will have its big day! Iceland had a quite extensive pre selection process, like in the years before. There were several shows and one big final. The big hope from 2009 Johanna re-entered the contest, but failed with another beautiful ballad. Therefore Sjonni’s Friends could get the ticket for Düsseldorf. Some of the band members are no strangers in the Eurovision scene. The song “Aftur heim” was originally sung by Sigurión (Sjonni) Brink, but he died just shortly before the contest by a heart attack. Therefore, his friends put together as a tribute to their lost friend and gained the hearts of the Icelanders. The song “Coming home” is a nice, melodic brass band piece of music. Knowing the story of what happened to the singer gives a special meaning to this song, and this could very well in Düsseldorf. Another nice and heart-warming surprise of Iceland!
