 For the 17th time already, Estonia is participating in the Eurovision Song Contest. In the debut year 1994 “Nagu Merelaine” by Silvi Vrait only received two points only. Who expected that this small country would become the black diamond in the ESC? There were so many glorious and unforgettable entries, even if the ranking often does not reflect the quality of the song. Remember “Keelatud Maa” by Maarja Liis-Ilus (#8) in 1997, “Once in a lifetime” by Ines (#4) and “Rändajad” by Urban Symphony (#6). The winning song from 2001 “Everybody” was a surprise winner but not a hit in the European charts. The Estonian music scene is very vivid and a close to the Finnish. That’s also why Estonia and Finland are eager to vote for each other year by year. The Estonian songs in Eurovision were not always “happy songs” there were quite a few experiment-like songs with cool sounds, new rhythms in other words ”music of tomorrow”. In this year’s Estonian national final there were many brilliant songs, which could all have done very well in the Eurovision Song Contest, very contemporary songs like “Smile” by MID. After last year’s progressive entry “Siren” by Malcom Lincoln (#14 in the semi final), Estonia is going to take the “safe way”. “Rockefeller Street” is a very catchy tune with hit potential, this song won’t get out of your ear once listened and it’s easy to sing the song along. The lovely singer Getter Jaani could do very well in ESC, if she improves the stage performance. In the video clip the abstract skyline buildings appear a bit chunky which hide the song to flow along. This is a big favourite this year and you should have this on your list! |
